How to use “duay ด้วย “

When we hear Thai language that Thai Natives chatting, we will recognize that they like to use the word “duay ด้วย(dûay).

They use this word so frequently in different situations, so some foreigners confuse, and also cannot understand what “duay” is.

In other words, mastering how to use “duay” in different situations is crucial to be fluent like native speakers.

“duay ด้วย” as “together”

While we spend some time in Thailand, we remember easy thai verbs like ” go = pai ไป” or “eat = kin กิน”

When we use “duay ด้วย” after some verbs, the verbs change the meaning to  “do something together”, 

pai duay ไปด้วย(pai dûay) ⇒ go together
kin duay กินด้วย(kin dûay) ⇒ eat together

I’m going to go eat, you come together?   ⇒  pom ja pai kin kaao, pai duay mai
ผมจะไปกินข้าวไปด้วยไหม(pʰǒm cà pai kin kʰâaw pai dûay mǎi)

pom ผม(pʰǒm) ⇒ I, my, me (for male)

ja จะ(cà) ⇒ will

kaao ข้าว(kʰâaw) ⇒ rice  

mai ไหม(mǎi) ⇒ make interrogative sentences

 

“duay ด้วย” as “too”

You should have a situation that you want to say “I want this one, too”

Then you can use “duay ด้วย” here.

when you shopping‥‥
I’ll take this, too ⇒ ao an nii duay
เอาอันนี้ด้วย(ao an níi dûay)

In the Thai restaurant‥‥
A fried egg, too ⇒ kai daao duay
ไข่ดาวด้วย(kʰài daaw dûay)

ao เอา (ao) ⇒ want

an nii อันนี้ (an níi) ⇒ this

kai daao ไข่ดาว (kʰài daaw) ⇒ fried egg

 

“duay ด้วย” as “and also”

You can also use “duay ด้วย” like “・・・・,and also・・・”

This food is so delicious, and also cheap ⇒
aa haan nii aroi tuuk duay
อาหารนี้อร่อยถูกด้วย(aa hǎan nîi a rɔ̀y tʰùuk dûay)

aa haan อาหาร (aa hǎan) ⇒ food

nii นี้ (níi) ⇒ this

aroi อร่อย (a rɔ̀y)  ⇒ delicious

tuuk ถูก (tʰùuk) ⇒ cheap

“duay ด้วย” as “please”

When you ask someone to do something, you can use “duay ด้วย”.

chuay duay ช่วยด้วย(cʰûay dûay) ⇒ help me please

This is one of the famous Thai phrases.

And when u put some words between “chuay ช่วย” and “duay ด้วย”, you can say”please help me to do something”

Could you book a hotel, please ⇒ chuay joon rong reem duay
ช่วยจองโรงแรมด้วย(cʰûay cɔɔŋ rooŋ rɛɛm dûay)

joon จอง (cɔɔŋ) ⇒ book, reserve

rong reem โรงแรม (rooŋ rɛɛm) ⇒ hotel

 

Useful Expressions

chin duay จริงด้วย (ciŋ dûay) ⇒ You’re right

hen duay เห็นด้วย (hěn dûay) ⇒ I agree

duay tua een ด้วยตัวเอง (dûay tua eeŋ) ⇒ by myself

chek bin duay เช็คบิลล์ด้วย (chek bin dûay) ⇒ check please

 

Even good Thai speakers, it is difficult to command “duay ด้วย” perfectly.
